Miles Morales Wearing Adidas Superstar Shoes in Marvel's Spider-Man is an Affront Against the AJ1

Look, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales seems awesome and I’m excited to play it later this week when my PS5 shows up on my doorstep. That being said, there’s a major elephant in the room that we need to discuss and it comes in regards to Miles’ shoewear.

Insomniac Games released a new post over on the PlayStation Blog this morning that talks all about the shoes that Miles will be wearing with certain costumes in the game, and it’s not the same pair that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing him don within the past few years. Yes, rather than wearing his iconic set of Air Jordan 1 shoes, Miles has now drastically traded down and will be wearing some red and black Adidas Superstars. Insomniac said that it wanted to honor the sneaker’s 50th anniversary in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and even is creating a real pair of the shoes that will go up for sale later this month on November 19.

Look, if you’re not into sneaker culture, I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “What’s the big deal?” And honestly, this isn’t the travesty that I’m making it out to be. In fact, I really like Superstars and I think the pair that Miles is rocking in-game are actually pretty sleek. I may even look to cop the high-top iteration later this month because I’m bad with my money.

That being said, it just feels so wrong to see Miles wearing anything other than his iconic pair of Air Jordan 1’s that he has in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. For better or worse, that movie cemented the fact Miles is someone who would wear AJ1’s on a regular basis. Sneaker culture is very much about letting your shoes be reflective of your own personality and your taste. For Miles to now go from being an AJ1 guy to wearing Adidas is pretty much the sneaker equivalent of going from eating a steak dinner to snacking on a piece of bologna.

Obviously, there are a lot of factors at play with why the iconic AJ1 silhouette isn’t in Miles Morales. Perhaps Insomniac couldn’t get the license, maybe they preferred working with Adidas, and more so than anything, the ensuing real-world shoe deal likely ended up playing a major reason in why this came about. Either way, it’s still just an odd thing to see at face value. Then again, this is a different interpretation of Miles’ character. Clearly, it’s just one who has a worse taste in sneakers.

All the same, I’m excited to play through Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales later this week when it releases on November 12 for PS4 and PS5.
